Rome

Italy

Ciao

I have been to Rome twice, once in 2011 with, my then, partner and again with some friends as part of a wider trip in Italy in 2017. Both visits were before I created this website and blog, and therefore both written from memory and only have pictures from the main landmarks. Both times were pleasant and visited the major landmarks (the Colosseum, the Trevi fountain, the Spanish Steps and the Vatican). The food, of course, was just amazing and I just wish I had more pictures of the food, the pizza, pasta and gelatos to show. Having been twice now, I am not sure I would ever have the urge to go back, and would opt for other regions in Italy.

Sep 2011 / July 2017       4 Days / 2 Days

Colosseum in the evening

The first time I came to Rome we visited the Colosseum, and the second time I came again with my two friends who had not been before. So to make it a little different we opted to do an evening tour to see it lit up at sunset and into the night.

We did a guided tour of the arena and the dungeons before, and being in the evening it was much cooler. You get to go into the colosseum before sunset so you see it in daylight, but you get to see the various views as the sun goes down.

Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II

Other than a hotel (and even then there are no high rise hotels or buildings) this is the only place in Rome you get 360 views of the city. It is located right next to the Colosseum and the ancient ruins so the views (though it’s a flat city) are pretty great. The building has the nickname “the wedding cake building” because of its white and grand structure. Google says: The Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, is a monument built in honour of Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill.

Trevi Fountain

This is a very crowded tourist hotspot but do not let that put you off! It’s a stunning place and one you need to see in day light and at night time. It’s free and in central Rome so changes are you’ll pass this a number of times or at least come very close to it. The Trevi Fountain is a fountain in the Trevi district in Rome, designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini.

Spanish Steps

The first time I was in Rome, we drove past this in a Taxi, so on my second visit I wanted to see these properly. Many movies have been filmed here, one of my all time favourites “The Talented Mr Ripley” being one of them.

Vatican City

I’ve never been inside, but the museums there are supposed to be interesting if that’s your thing. I came here both times, and on the second visit (it was a Sunday) we got to see the Pope give his Sunday speech (or whatever its called) from the window! Wasn’t of massive interest to me, but not many people get to say they have seen the Pope!
