Miami

USA

Welcome to Miami

I didn’t know what to expect with Miami and did little research before I went. I travelled with a friend for 5 night, for my birthday in May. I knew there was nice beaches, I had also heard about all the Art Deco architecture, and I knew it had a decent night scene.

We opted for an Airbnb as when we looked at the costs this seemed to be the best option, and it really was! We found an apartment about a 15-minute walk from south beach. For its residents it had a pool and a gym free for use.

I think this trip (which we combined with 4 nights in Havana, Cuba) was the point I caught the travel bug!

Summer 2017       4 Days

Southbeach

South beach is huge! I don’t know what I expected, I mean it’s not the most attractive looking beach, it’s certainly not a tropical beach with palm trees. But I did enjoy seeing all the surf rescue/lookout huts (each in their own style and colour). My friend did an hour’s yoga class, and I tried to join in on muscle beach with some of the lads working out on the bars. But I sadly embarrassed myself when I struggled to pass more than 3 monkey bars!

Star Island

Star island is appropriately named as it is an island accessible only by boat and houses many famous stars. From our AirBnB accommodation, star island was on the opposite side of the water front which we looked out on every day. Right opposite there was a lovely house with a boat at the back. On the last day we did a small tour on a boat of the area, and we found out the house belonged to David and Victoria Beckham. So I can honestly say I’ve been neighbours with the Beckhams!

CJ's Crab Shack

A seafood restaurant I had seen on social media and by all accounts very popular. It’s on Ocean Drive, across the way from the beach. Without a doubt the best lobster linguine I have ever tasted.

Everglades

To be honest I had never heard of the Everglades before, and it was my friend that suggested we go. I am glad she did because it was a fantastic day trip. We got into an airboat (a flat small boat with a massive fan on the back), with around 10 other people. You go through the rivers, and you stop in certain points, essentially looking for alligators. We managed to see a couple of alligators which came fairly close to the boat.

After the boat ride you get to see an alligator show, where the tour guide gets very close (putting his head inside one of their mouths!) Finally, you get to hold a little baby alligator. Awwh

Biscayne Bay

A lovely Maria area we visited after our days tour to the Everglades. Unfortunately, I had such a bad blister on my foot, otherwise I’d loved to have walked around a little more.

Southgate Towers

We couldn’t have chosen better for our Airbnb, don’t get me wrong it came at a cost, but it was worth every penny. It had a gym which we used every day, and an outdoor pool and terrace area. The views from our apartment over the bay and towards Miami city were stunning. Every day a different sunset!
